Maryland Voices, Maryland’s first creative nonfiction publication for high school students, is now accepting creative nonfiction works from Maryland students in grades 9-12. Selected stories will be published in Volume XI of Maryland Voices in May 2020.
Creative nonfiction is the telling of a true story in an entertaining and creative way. Stories must be under 3,000 words.

to do What’s Right:
In 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. told a group of students,
“The time is always right to do what’s right.” Dr. King was
referencing the recent turmoil and violence in our country,
but through a vision and hope for peace. As the theme for the
2020 MLK, Jr. Memorial breakfast, we encourage you to reflect
upon what this statement means to you, as a future leader
and change agent for peace and equality for all.
WJZ’s Annual Black History Oratory Competition begins on January 1, 2019 and is open to all Maryland high school students in grades 9-12.
Students select one of the designated motivational quotes by Ray Lewis, Romare Bearden or Michelle Obama, and write an original essay.

The three winners shall also receive complimentary registrations for the Balticon Science Fiction Convention for themselves and their parents or one guest each and a free
Balticon T-Shirt.
The deadline is March 31st of any given year.
Submissions must be in the field of science fiction or fantasy.

b. Submissions shall be no more than 2,500 words in length.
c. All submissions should include a title page with the title of the story, the entrant’s name or note Home schooled, home address, evening phone number, and e-mail address if possible. Also, please include your English teacher’s name.
d. Paper submissions must have numbered pages – all submissions must have a footer with the title and page number. They should not have the entrants name or other identifying information on the individual pages. Paper submissions should be typed or printed, double-spaced, on 8.5 x 11″ paper.
e. Electronic submissions must be sent as an attachment to email in either Microsoft Word, PDF or Word Perfect format. Otherwise they must be printed out and submitted on paper. One contestant may submit multiple entries, but only one prize may be won by any one entrant.
f. The winners will be contacted before the convention and their names will be announced to the public at the next Balticon on Memorial Day Weekend just before the Masquerade on Saturday night.. Winners need not be present to receive their prizes.

National Poetry Month Poster Contest
The Academy of American Poets, the originator and organizer of National Poetry Month, invites students in the United States who are in grades 9 through 12 to enter artwork to be considered for the official April 2019 National Poetry Month poster. For the first time in twenty-two years, the poster, which is sent to 100,000 libraries, schools, bookstores, and community centers nationwide and made available by download on Poets.org, will feature a student’s winning artwork. The winning student will be featured on Poets.org, in American Poets magazine, and will receive $500 plus signed copies of books by this year’s judges, Academy Chancellor Emeritus Naomi Shihab Nye and renowned graphic designer and educator Debbie Millman. Submissions will be accepted online between September 1 and October 31, 2018.
Finalists will each receive a copy of American Journal, an anthology of fifty contemporary poems selected and with an introduction by U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy K. Smith, published by Graywolf Press. Continue reading “National Poetry Month Poster Contest”
